Here at Starship Overflow, we recently learned of the sad passing, of our old friend and presenter Gordon Ganja.
Our long running reggae show - The Black Sounds Of Freedom, was originally presented by Reggae Ray. But GG also presented the show for a while, back in 1990 / 1991.
By trade, he was a brilliant leathersmith! He made various things for fellow dj's and.. we still have.. sitting in the production studio on the desk, a beautiful leather Overflow patch he made for us in 1989. Still looks brand new!
My funniest memory of the man... One Sunday night (1991) we had all been to Happy Hour at The (now legendary) Bakers Arms and came back to the studio absolutely plastered.
Gordon decided he wanted to do a live reggae show once we'd stumbled up the stairs, so he did. Meantime, we'd brought all these eggy sandwiches back from the pub... to which I have no recollection as to why??
No sooner had Gordon started his show, he had an attack of the munchies, so started on the eggy sarnies.
Within minutes, his beard (imagine a ZZ Top style beard) was just full egg! It was down his shirt, jacket, his jeans and funniest of all, all over his face.
Meantime he's merrily chatting away on air in his slurred west country accent, about how much he loves thesed eggy sandwich!
We were all in hysterics in the background, so with the added sound effects it made a real Pirate Radio moment.
We still have the cassette tape recording somewhere here. So when it's found, will get it cleaned up.
REST IN PEACE - GORDON GANJA
A lovely & very funny fella.
